Mary Halvorson – guitarist who pushes the boundaries

From July 18, the guitarist Mary Halvorson will have 12 performances with her octet, during  six nights at Village Vanguard, presenting their last album Away With You and new compositions as well.

This 36-year-old artist has been recording and performing since 2002, and has released more than 20 albums exploring new territories of music in terms of improvisation and composition. Marc Ribot wrote about Halvorson that “she’s not just a great and very skilled guitarist, but an important musical thinker who happens to use guitar.”

Her work is becoming more and more important on the international scene, and if there is a line dividing jazz and rock, then Mary Halvorson will make that border pointless, even though she herself says that jazz is an unavoidable descriptor because “I’m not sure there’s a better word.”

Although she is appearing in the legendary New York’s club Village Vanguard in a larger formation, Halvorson performs in various formations as leader and sidewoman and very often in duo-trio-quartet combinations such as the trio Thumbscrew which, apart from Halvorson, consists of the  bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Tomas Fujiwara.

This ensemble will have a concert during the XX1st Jazz Fest Sarajevo on November 4 at the Dom policije. The Thumbscrew Trio concert ticket is also valid for solo concert of Mario Batković, which will also be held the same day in the Dom policije venue.
