Drummer Magnus Öström, member of the former Esbjörn Svensson Trio (E.S.T.), is going to release a new album in April, the third CD under his name called Parachute.
He recorded the new release in a quartet with guitarist Andreas Hourdakis, bassist and keyboardist Thobias Gabrielson and pianist Daniel Karlsson, with whom he also recorded his previous albums Thread of Life and Searching for Jupiter, released by the record label ACT in 2011 and 2013.
Parachute is dedicated to “music and to the energy it carries”, explained Öström, for whom this album represents a symbol of a difficult period he went through after the tragic death of his friend and collaborator Esbjörn Svensson, who passed away at the peak of his career in 2008.
“Sometimes life has been OK, but at other times it has been really dark. When I have been at my lowest, music has been there to save me, it has been my parachute”, said this Swedish artist referring to the symbolic nature of this release’s title and added: “As a temporary guest on this planet I hope I will leave it a better place than when I arrived. That’s what I’m striving for.”
The Esbjörn Svensson Trio, whose member Öström has been since 1993, has released 15 albums, among which Seven Days Of Falling, which pianist Svensson, double bassist Dan Berglund and Öström introduced in Sarajevo at the 7th Jazz Fest in 2003.
