After an almost 20 year break, David Torn is on solo American tour. He is going to play concerts in 20 cities where the guitarist and composer will promote his album Only Sky that will officially be released on 22 May.
Torn plays guitar and electric oud on the new album that will be released full eight years after his latest CD Prezens, also recorded for ECM, in a quartet with Tim Berne, Craig Taborn and Tom Rainey.
Torn is a double Grammy award winner who collaborated with various artists like David Bowie, Jeff Beck, Tori Amos, Madonna, Jan Garbarek, Laurie Anderson or John Legend. He was diagnosed with brain cancer at the beginning of 1990’s. Despite successful surgery and good prognosis he lost his hearing on the left ear, which didn’t stop him to continue composing, playing, recording and producing many records “by rather visualizing aspects of sound then hearing them”, he said.
A piece that is about be released two years later on Only Sky, was presented by David Torn in 2013 at TEDx Caltech conference: The Brain which focused on the past, presence and future of neuroscience.
