Miles Davis: “John McLaughlin”

On this day in 1991 Miles Davis died. A jazz great and one of most important musicians of the 20th century whose influence on new generations of artists and jazz lovers didn’t abate two decades after his death.

His album Kind of Blue is among most sold albums in history of jazz while the musicians he collaborated with through  different ensembles established themselves as most important jazzists of their time, among them Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, John McLaughlin, BIll Frisell, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, John Scofield.

“For me it was a dream come true!”, McLaughlin recalls his collaboration on four Miles’ albums. “I will be forever grateful for his support, inspiration and the encouragement he gave me from the very beginning of my career.”

On Miles’ 1970 double album Bitches Brew is a composition called John McLaughlin, a song Miles didn’t participate in, that pays honor to the artistry and technique of a musician we will be listening to on 05 November at the 18th Jazz Fest where he is going to perform with his 4th Dimension ensemble.

Listen to the composition John McLaughlin.
