Echo Jazz 2014 winners announced

This year the German music award Echo Jazz 2014 will be awarded to international artists like Gregory Porter, Joshua Redman, Dave Holland and Pat Metheny, as well as to famous names of German scene like Joachim Kuhn, Dejan Terzić and Till Brönner.

Echo Jazz is the German equivalent to the American Grammy Award. At the gala awarding ceremony in Hamburg on 22 May the awards will be given to jazz artists in categories national and international artist of the year, with a total of 21 subcategories. The winner list can be seen at the official website while the name of the Lifetime Achievement award winner will be known at the awarding ceremony in Hamburg.

On the winners list are included many artists we have seen on Jazz Fest stages. Pianist of the year award will be given to Joachim Kuhn who performed with his trio at the Jazz Fest in 2004. Dave Holland was named bassist of the year, he performed at our festival in 2001, 2010 and 2011, while Banja Luka born Dejan Terzić, who opened the festival with his ensemble in 2006, will receive the award for drummer of the year. Echo Jazz 2014 for best saxophonist of the year is going to Joshua Redman who we listened to in 2007.

“This year’s jury choice consists of important international artists whose opus is carved into music scene of past few decades, but also newcomers whose work so far indicates huge artistic potential”, was written in the official press release of the Deutsche Phono-Akademie – German cultural institution associated with the National Music Industry Association who is awarding the Echo Jazz since 2010.
