Documentary about Charles Lloyd

European premiere of the documentary Arrows Into Infinity about saxophonist Charles Lloyd was held last night in Munich at the local film festival.

The movie brings a story about the life and work of this American saxophonist, composer and multi-instrumentalist from the perspective of his wife Dorothy Darr who has been following him with a camera for almost 45 years of their marriage.

In the movie Darr shows the rise, fall and return on the stage of one of jazz legends by showing his humble beginnings, career triumphs and his unique journey through music.

The movie was shot in cooperation with co-director and producer Jeffrey Morse with whom Darr has collaborated on movies Home (2006) and Memphis In Egypt (1995), also documentaries about some aspects of Lloyd’s life and career.

Herbie Hancock, Stanley Crouch, Geri Allen, Zakir Hussain, John Densmore, Michael Duscuna, Robbie Robertson, Jack DeJohnette, Don Was and Manfred Eicher talk in the movie about Lloyd, his music and the influence his creative work has on generations of musicians.

Beside interviews and Darr’s material, the movie shows a recording of a performance of the Charles Lloyd Quartet with the original  cast (Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette) at the Antibes Festival in 1966. After a broadcast on French national television that year, the performance has never been broadcasted or shown again.
