American saxophonist and flutist Charles Lloyd will be playing a concert tonight in Washington, organized to celebrate his 75th birthday.
On the stage of Kennedy Center he will be ‘celebrating’ with pianist Jason Moran, Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain, bassist Reuben Rogers, Greek lyrist Sokratis Sinopoulos, drummer Eric Harland and vocalists Alicia Hall Moran and Maria Farantouri.
Tonight’s concert at the Kennedy Center will be Charles Lloyd’s second celebration of his 75th birthday. The first performance was on his birthday 15 March at New York’s Metropolitan Art Museum with the same ensemble, only this time joined by Hussain.
Charles Lloyd released Discovery! 50 years ago, it was his first album as a leader, 39 more followed as well as many collaborations with musicians like B.B. King, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, The Beach Boys and many more. Lloyd’s albums are not only acclaimed among jazz audience, but also among critics and music lovers who do not prefer jazz.
In April Lloyd will continue the tour with his Charles Lloyd New Quartet consisting of Jason Moran, Reuben Roger i Eric Harland. Listen to their July 2011 performance.
