Mini interview: Badi Assad

Brazilian artist Badi Assad is going to perform for the first time in Sarajevo on the second day of 16th Jazz Fest.

Every performance of this singer, guitarist and percussionist is a unique experience completed by her vocal improvisations. Although she started her career in the frames of classic music, today she uses elements of traditional Brazilian music and combines them with different music styles while the audience stays amazed by her virtuous technique.

1. How do you feel as a female performer in a world dominated by male guitarists?
Like a queen.

2. In what extent do you connect to the classical music and on the other hand to the musical tradition of your country, Brazil?
Since I was a child I had both musical styles in my home: my brothers studying classical guitar and my parents having musical gatherings with popular Brazilian music. Growing up listening to both worlds created inside of me a natural bridge that connects the two universes. Nonetheless I feel more connected to the popular world because I like its energy and lack of rules and structures.

3. What is your experience with working together with artists of different styles and genres?
Every time I collaborate with someone I let the experience lead it. I give my best in that specific situation and let it flow. If it is music from the classical world my guitar and vocal will chop, and if comes from the pop world, the rhythms and energy will be highlighted.

4. You celebrate 20 years of your career, so who is Badi Assad today, as an artist?
Full of energy, ideas, new desires and dreams, but at the same time comfortable with myself and happy. I am mesmerized with the birth of my first child at the moment, discovering the blessings and adventures of it. It also brought me an intense period of inspiration so I composed almost 150 songs. Some of them will be on my upcoming album “Love and other chronic manias”, and others will be presented in a project for kids next year.

5. You will be presenting yourself for the first time to the audience in Sarajevo. What can we expect?
A lot of emotions, Brazilian rhythms, guitar playing, vocal juggling. Resuming: the best of myself.
