Jure Pukl: Abstract Society

Abstract Society is the name of the latest, 6th in a row studio album of Slovenian saxophonist Jure Pukl.

The album was released by Europe’s oldest record label, Denmark’s Storyville Records. It was recorded in New York in May this year at the Samurai Hotel Recording Studio.

All compositions on the record are originals by the Slovenian saxophonist. He was joined in he studio by the young Indian-American star pianist Vijay Iyer, drummer Damion Reid and bassist Joe Sanders.

Pukl belongs to the young generation of Slovenian musicians. British The Guardian wrote about him at the beginning of this year: “a rising star of a new creative generation that’s leading music into it’s new century”.

Beside six albums recorded under his name, Pukl worked on more then 30 releases of other musicians. Among names he recorded or performed with are Maceo Parker, Esperanza Spalding, Aaron Goldberg, Marcus Gilmore, Johnatan Blake.

He studied classic and jazz saxophone in Vienna, and continued his musical education at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, after which he studied at Berklee College of Music under the mentorship of Joe Levano and George Garzone. He finished his master thesis at the Music Academy of Graz.

Pukl performs with numerous ensembles, we bring you here a small part of the atmosphere of Jure Pukl New York Group concert at Lisinski in October 2009. The ensemble is made of pianist Aruan Ortiz, double bassist Mike Janisch and drummer Klemens Marktl.
