“Street of Sarajevo” at Cerkno

The international music festival Jazz Cerkno ended last night in this small Slovenian town, 70 kilometers away from the capital Ljubljana. This was the 17th edition of the festival.

Next-to-last night of the festival, on Sunday evening, Australian composer and oud player Joseph Tawadros and French accordionist Jean-Louis Matinier shared the stage, and performed, among others, Tawadros’ composition Street of Sarajevo, that he composed during his stay at the 15th edition of the Jazz Fest Sarajevo 2011.

“I composed this piece in the night before the Sarajevo concert in November last year”, said Tawadros while he was talking about the premiere performance of it with his brother, percussionist James Tawadros, at their joint concert at Sarajevo’s Pozorište mladih.

“A string usually brakes at the end of this piece, but surprisingly it didn’t happen tonight”, Tawadros said. The Tawadros-Matinier duo is touring Europe at the moment and Street of Sarajevo is part of their usual concert repertoire.

Jazz Cerkno is a festival that gathers few thousand jazz and improvised music fans from Slovenia and neighboring countries every year, even though it is held in a small town of 2000 inhabitants.

This festival is a great opportunity for promotion of local tourist attractions and capacities. It is an important cultural event that is contributing to the economic development of the region which was recognized by the state authorities who support it in various ways.
