In 1995, jazz legends bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Hank Jones recorded a milestone of eloquent music, Steal Away, based largely on traditional spirituals and folk songs. The New York Times called the Grammy-nominated duo album “exquisite,” while another reviewer wrote, “This is music by two masters, immersing themselves in profound stream of American music.”
This January EmArcy Records released Come Sunday, a collection of classic spirituals, hymns and folk songs, the CD marks the follow-up to their recording Steal Away, and was the last collaboration between two longtime friends and colleagues. In a career spanning over 70 years, Hank Jones passed away in 2010 at the age of 91, shortly after completing this album.
Come Sunday was recorded at Sear Sound Studio in New York City on February 2-3 2010. The CD features several Christian hymns such as Blessed Assurance, Take My Hand, Precious Lord, Bringing In The Sheaves as well as a couple of Christmas holiday favorites, including God Rest Ye Merry, Gentleman and It Came Upon A Midnight Clear.
Haden performed at 9th Jazz Fest Sarajevo 2005 with his Liberation Music Orchestra feat. Carla Bley.
