New York honors Miles

Today the West 77th Street will officially be renamed to Miles Davis Way.

After the ceremonial reveal of the street sign set for noon local time, the party in honor of Miles Davis, a musician whose 88th birthday is being celebrated around the world today, will go on at a public block party where beside New York’s mayor Michael Bloomberg Davis’ family members, daughter Cheryl and son Erin will be present.

Davis used to live more then 25 years in a building with the number 312 in a street that today caries his name. From second half of 50s’ to mid 80s’, a period when his famous albums Kind of Blue and Bitches Brew were recorded, and his regular guests used to be musicians he collaborated with like Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey and Tony Williams.

The renaming process of West 77th Street into Miles Davis Way was initiated by a resident of Davis’ building in 1991 after the great artist’s death
