American guitarist, composer and improvisor Marc Ribot and his ensemble The Young Philadelphians are coming to Europe next month for a summer tour, to promote their album Live in Tokyo.
The ensemble of Ribot, guitarist Mary Halvorson, bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma and drummer Calvin Weston pays tribute to the Philly Soul era of the 1970s with this album, by the Jazz Times described as “a postmodern soul revue”, which they will present during July in Poland, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France and Spain.
These hard working musicians interpret compositions like The Hustle, Do It Any Way You Want or Love Roller Coaster with a sound they described as “punk, funk, soul noise”.
We will get the chance to listen to Ribot and his fellow member of The Young Philadelphians at 20th Jazz Fest Sarajevo within John Zorn’s Bagatelles Marathon. Calvin Weston will perform as a member of the John Medeski Trio and Marc Ribot as a member of Asmodeus, with bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer Tyshawn Sorey under the baton of John Zorn.
We already had the pleasure of enjoying Marc Ribot’s music at a solo concert he held in 2007 at the 11th Jazz Fest Sarajevo.
