Essential Cinema – an exceptional program that is rarely performed on the scene, and which is part of the Musick and Magick program at XX1st Jazz Fest Sarajevo, will be held at the Sarajevo War Theater (SARTR) on Wednesday, November 1st.
This is just one of 11 programs that will be featured on this year’s Jazz Fest in a program dedicated to John Zorn, one of the greatest contemporary American composers who will perform at this concert.
Essential Cinema is a sort of music and movie pilgrimage that brings improvised music to film screenings of some of the 20th century classics of American authors Harry Smith and Wallace Berman.
The quartet of John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Trevor Dunn and Kenny Wollesen will give a voice to moving pictures of the authors who are the most striking art figures of American cultural history of the past century – Berman’s Aleph and Smith’s works such as Oz – The Tin Woodman’s Dream, A Strange Dream or Mirror Animations.
In addition to being a passionate admirer and an extraordinary movie connoisseur, John Zorn has composed music for dozens of movies, released on a total of 25 CDs. In the mid-eighties, he received recognition round the world for the album The Big Gundown, which brings a collection of classical compositions by Ennio Morricone, arranged and produced by John Zorn.
Morricone himself has said: “This is a record that has fresh, good and intelligent ideas. It is realization on a high level, a work done by a maestro with great science-fantasy and creativity … Many people have done versions of my pieces, but no one has done them like this.”
Tickets for this movie and music event can be purchased at a pre-sale price.
