John Zorn compositions world premiere

American composer and multiinstrumentalist John Zorn will premiere five new compositions at this year’s Composer Portraits program at Columbia University.

On 20 October the audience at New York’s Miller Theatre will get the chance to attend the world premiere of compositions Zorn wrote this year: The Blue Strategem, Candlemas Eve, FreudCagliostro and Obscure Objects of Desire as well as  Il n’y a plus de firmament and Oviri (both from 2014), to be performed by the American Brass Quintet, JACK Quartet and Talea Ensemble under the baton of conductor James Baker, with cellists Jay Campbell and Michael Nicolas, guitarist Marc Ribot, pianist Stephen Gosling and Ikue Mori.

The October concert will be the second presentation of John Zorn’s compositions within the Composer Portraits concert series after this first introduction held in 2012. The program is being organized by the Columbia University School of the Arts with the goal of introducing new works of some of the most interesting composers of today whose works are an important contribution to contemporary music.

We will have the pleasure of listening to Zorn at the 20th Jazz Fest Sarajevo on 04 November when he will be performing together with 12 ensembles of musicians from New York’s downtown scene (among them the before mentioned Ribot, Campbell and Ikue Mori) the John Zorn’s Bagatelles Marathon Sarajevo program, the European premiere performance of compositions from The Bagatelles song book he wrote between March and May 2015.
