“New Life” by Antonio Sanchez

Mexican drummer Antonio Sanchez released New Life, his third album as a bandleader.

As the title suggests, the new CD represents a turning point for Sanchez. “I wanted this record to be a milestone for me. When you’re a drummer, there’s this stigma that you’re the musician’s best friend but you’re not really in the same category as the other guys. I wanted to prove that it doesn’t have to be that way”, said three time Grammy winner Sanchez.

All eight compositions on the album were composed by Sanchez. He recorded them with tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin, alto saxophonist David Binney, pianist John Escreet and bassist Matt Brewer. Special guest on the project was female vocalist Thana Alex.

This artist is by colleagues and music critics being referred to as “master of dynamics”. He collaborated with such names as Chick Corea, Danilo Perez, Garry Burton, Miguel Zenon, Dianne Reeves, Jane Monheit and Pat Metheny on whose projects he has been collaborating for the last 13 years.
