Tomasz Stańko: album for Wisława Szymborska

A new album by Polish trumpeter and composer Tomasz Stańko was released.

The album named Wisława, was released for ECM, and the material was recorded in June last year with his New York Quartet consisting of Cuban pianist David Virelles, and American musicians: doublebass player Thomas Morgan and drummer Gerald Cleaver.

It is a double CD dedicated to late Polish poet and Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature  Wisława Szymborska, often described as Mozart of Poetry. Stańko and Szymborska had a joint performance in 2009 at the Kraków Opera when the poet red her poetry followed by Stańko’s improvisations on trumpet.

Stańko found inspiration for his latest album in the last collection of poems published for life of the author who passed away last year. The 2009 collection Here inspired all 12 compositions published on two CD’s, premier performed on 9 February at Munich’s museum Haus der Kunst.
