On 2 November, the 16th edition of Jazz Fest Sarajevo will present the French accordionist and composer Richard Galliano with his La Strada Quintet playing compositions by the famous Italian film music composer Nino Rota.
It is the famous compositions from equally famous movie classics such as Fellini’s La dolce vita and La Strada or Coppola’s Godfather, which brought Rota the Grammy, the Oscar and the Golden Globe for best film music, not to mention his other awards and nominations.
Critics consider Galliano one of the most important accordionists of our time. An inspiring artist whose compositions celebrate the jazz accordion. Some of his albums, such as Blow Up, sold over 100,000 copies, while his album Bach on the Accordion became the best selling classical album in 2010, with more then 40,000 copies sold.
The La Strada Quintet project was founded last year on the hundredth anniversary of the Italian composer. In Sarajevo, Galliano will perform Nino Rota’s repertoire with the extraordinary Italian musicians: trumpeter Flavio Boltro, clarinetist Mauro Negri, bassist Furio di Castri, and drummer Mattia Barbieri.
During his rich carrier Galliano played with some of the who’s who is jazz like Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Joe Zawinul, and Charlie Haden. He was great friends with Astor Piazzola, and he dedicated two albums to him.
In 2000, he performed at the 4th Jazz Fest Sarajevo with his trio. Galliano proves with every performance that he is a great and versatile musician, able to captivate the audience no matter what the context – from solo performances to big orchestra concerts.
Galliano will be performing on 2 November at the BKC.
