Jay Campbell, one of Jazz Fest performers

Celist Jay Campbell is one of John Zorn’s Sarajevo Marathon participants, at which he will perform in a duet with cellist Eric Friedlander.

Diverse repertoire and various interests in music made Campbell an artist who approaches every genre, new and old musical pieces with the same enthusiasm, demonstrating artistic curiosity and commitment, from the very beginnings of his career.

Campbell’s performances have been called “electrifying” by the New York Times and “gentle, poignant, and deeply moving” by the Washington Post. The young artist who has performed  at prestigious venues like the Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in New York and KKL in Luzern in his twenties, has had his debut performance with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013.

He is closely collaborating with some of the most creative musicians of his generation. His album Hen to Pan, released last year, came as a result of his work with John Zorn. Campbell performed the album’s repertoire with an ensemble of pianist Stephen Gosling, cellist Michael Nicolas, violinist Chris Otto and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. Hen to Pen was voted one of the best releases of the year by the New York Times.

Until the end of this year, Campbell will have released a number of albums, including a CD with works by Beethoven, Debussy, Stravinsky and Pintscher and his second album for Zorn’s record label Tzadik.
