Ibrahim Maalouf: from high fashion to political drama

French-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf is going to introduce himself for the first time to Bosnian and Herzegovinian audience on 9 November, at the Bosnian Cultural Center, with a closing concert of the 18th edition of international music festival Jazz Fest Sarajevo.

Maalouf is not only an excellent instrumentalist, he is also an interesting author who composes not only for his own formations but for chamber and symphony orchestras, and film as well. The movie La crème de la crème by French director Kim Chapiron premiered last year and this year, two more movies Maalouf composed the music for were shown for the first time.

The first one, a biographical drama Yves Saint Laurent about the life of the fashion designer and the other, Red Rose by Iranian female director Sepideh Farsi, a love drama in the middle of turbulent political circumstances of Iran that premiered at Toronto Film Festival.

Beirut born Ibrahim Maalouf was a movie subject himself. In 2007 a documentary called Souffle! showed his relationship with his homeland and the space in between where Maalouf lives, composes and creates since he left Lebanon at the time of civil war.

Maalouf’s music is mostly inspired by Arabic culture, his performances make audiences dance despite short contemplative interludes at every concert, which Maalouf likes to call “joint universal prayer”.

At Jazz Fest in Sarajevo Maalouf is going to present the magical music from his latest album Illusions, that he is going to perform with his eight member ensemble, consisting of even four trumpeters beside the standard rhythm section.

You can book tickets for this concert with a 20% pre-sale discount and in the meantime listen to one of 12 compositions Ibrahim Maalouf composed for Yves Saint Laurent, that were released this year on a same named CD.
