The Big Sur Quintet, ensemble of American guitarist Bill Frisell is going to perform tonight and tomorrow night at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Frisell, a 2004 Grammy winner in the category Best Contemporary Jazz Album for his release Unspeakable, is going to perform with violinist Jenny Scheinman, violist Eyvind Kang, cellist and vocalist Hank Roberts and drummer Rudy Royston a repertoire inspired by a Woody Guthrie classic This Land Is Your Land who was an influential musician to numerous artists like Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger or John Mellencamp. The album Big Sur is Frisell’s 38th release under his name.
The ensemble Big Sur consisting of musicians who are going to perform tonight released an album last year with Frisell’s originals that were composed at ranch Glen Deven in Big Sur California where he spend some time twice. The album premiered in 2012 at Monterey Jazz Festival as a special project composed for that occasion.
Listen to how the project developed and what it sounds like.
