Cecile McLorin Salvant “Up and Coming Artist”

The Jazz Journalists Association named vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant Best Female Vocalist and Up and Coming Artist of last year.

Pianist Herbie Hancock was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, while among other winners in 31 categories were Wayne Shorter who was named Musician of the Year, Gregory Porter – Best Male Vocalist of the Year, Bill Frisell – Guitarist of the Year and Christian McBride – Bassist of the Year.

Historical Record of the Year title was given to Miles Live in Europe 1969, while the best release in the category Record of the Year went to Wayne Shorter Quartet’s Without a Net. ECM was named Record Label of the Year.

Jazz Journalists Association gave away it’s awards for the 18th year in a row. Nominations and winners are being chosen by association members – writers, publishers, photographers, broadcasters, bloggers, videographers and other professionals.

Some of this year’s winners like Craig Taborn who was named Pianist of the Year or Jack DeJohnette, winner in the category Drummer of the Year, Jazz Fest’s audience had the chance to listen to at previous festival concerts, and will also have the chance to see some of them this year at the next Jazz Fest edition this November.
