In memoriam: Cedar Walton

American pianist Cedar Walton has died yesterday in in his home in Brooklyn at the age of 79.

This artist’s impressive biography includes Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, whose members at that time were among others Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard, and more than 100 impressive releases. The magazine JazzTimes called him in remembrance “something of an institution on the New York club scene”.

He recorded almost 50 albums as a leader, from the first Cedar! in 1967 to the last The Bouncer in 2011 and has recorded and performed with names like John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Heath, Eddie Harris, Christian McBride and many others.

Many of Walter’s compositions like Firm Roots or Cedar’s Blues became jazz standards, Bolivia without a doubt is the most famous. Listen to it, performed by the ensemble of another hard bop great Freddie Hubbard. The 1990 footage was published the following year on Hubbard’s album of the same name.
