Charlie Parker Jazz Festival will traditionally be held in August, Parker’s birth month, close to locations where this famous musician used to live and work – Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem’s Historic District and Tompkins Square Park in the Lower East Side.
With the free concerts that will be organized through tree festival days at the 21st festival edition from 23 to 25 August the City Park Foundation aims to remember the creative opus and indelible mark that Charlie “Bird” Parker has left on jazz.
On this occasion musicians like saxophonists Kenny Garrett and Lee Konitz, vocalist Sheila Jordan, trumpeter Christian Scott, emerging vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant, drummer Kim Thompson, alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw and multi-instrumentalist Warren Wolf will gather.
Saxophonist Jimmy Heath with his big band is going to open this year’s festival edition. Beside Bird Is The Word that premiered at this festival in 2004, Heath will perform specially arranged Parker classics.
