American violist of Armenian origin Kim Kashkashian won an Award in the category for Best Classical Instrumental Solo at the 55th Grammy award ceremony in Los Angeles.
She won the award for the album Kurtág & Ligeti: Music for Viola recorded in May 2011 and released in September 2012 under the classic edition New Series of the record label ECM. The album consists of compositions of two contemporary composers György Kurtág and György Ligeti.
Kim Kashkashian devoted her career for the last two decades to the works of Hungarian composer György Kurtág. She explored the contrasts and connections of two musical worlds, the one of Kurtág and his longtime musical partner and contemporary from Romania György Ligeti.
